JAMES CHILDERS, SR. -- 1772-1854
Note: James Childers, Sr. was an elder (preacher) in the
Primitive Baptist church. He established several churches
in Tippah Co., Miss. He is the fourth great-grandfather of
Web master Tom L. Childers.
James Childers, Sr. was born August 3, 1772 in South
Carolina. He was a son of Thomas Childers and his wife
Lottie (Brewer) Childers. About 1795 he married Nancy
Jones, daughter of Nathan Jones and Courtney (Bell) Jones.
Nancy Jones was born August 7, 1775 in North Carolina,
probably in Edgecombe or Chatham County.
In 1826 James and Nancy Childers sold land to Washington
Eddins in Madison County, Alabama. In 1836 James Childers,
Sr., and many of his married children and their families
moved from Lincoln County, Tennessee and Alabama to Tippah
County, Mississippi.
On January 22, 1838, James Childers, Sr., made a deed of
gift of a Negro girl to his beloved daughter Martha for
natural love and affection.
Antioch Primitive Baptist Church was first constituted in
Tippah County, Mississippi, in July 1836, with members
holding letters which were examined and found orderly and
orthodox to wit: James Childers, John Davis, Jacob Lindsey,
Jams McCarty, Aurith Ritter, Charity Ritter, Mary Brumley,
Polly Allin, and Charlotte Townsend, total.
Those who served Antioch church as pastors were: Elder
James Childers, John A. Norton, J. B. Huddleston, M. B.
Moore, Anderson Norton, James Day, Thomas Huddleston, and
L. H. Jamison.
James Childers, Sr., died on May 5, 1854 and Nancy (Jones)
Childers died on May 15, 1857. Both are buried in marked
graves in Little Hope Cemetery in Tippah County,
Mississippi.

Primitive Baptist Church Records
In the year of our Lord, 1854, it has pleased the Divine
Mind to take to himself our beloved
brother and pastor of our church, James Childers, an old
fashion disciple of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. Deceased May 5 Age 82
Resolved that the same be recorded in our church book as a
remembrance of his labors and to
sympathise with his relations. Done by order of the church
in conference Saturday before the 3rd
Lords day in July 1854.
