Powell, Sr.
Servies for James R. "Jimmy" Powell, Sr. 71, who died of an
aortic rupture Thursday, March, 30, 1995, were at 1:00 p.m.
Saturday at Gunter and Peel Chapel in Columbus.
Mr. Powell, a retired minister, was born in the Mississippi
Delta. Mr. Powell was a minster and a member of the Church of
Christ. He preached more than 50 years at churches in
Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. He had served Columbus
area churches for the past 35 years. He held revivals in 15
states and in Puerto Rico.
He was preceded in death by his father George Snowden Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Flodine Flatt Powell of Columbus,
two sons, James R. Powell, Jr. of Memphis and Claude Daniel
Powell of Jackson, a daughter, Spring McCutchen of Henderson,
Tenn. his mother, Odelle Wiggins Powell of Greenwood, and
give grandchildren.
Burial was at Old Union Cemetery in Carroll County,
Mississippi. His brother-in-law, Curtis Flatt, officated.
Pallbearers were Frank McDaniel, Ralph Odom, W. A. Golden,
Ervin Shelton, Terry Hopper, Theo Coleman, A. C. Faulkner,
and J. Roy Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were the men from
Seventh Street Church of Christ, Highway 69 Church of Christ,
Lone Oak Church of Christ and Steens Church of Christ.

Brother Powell attended Freed-Hardeman College and Delta
State. He did daily radio programs for many years and
conducted a weekly TV program on WCBI-TV in Columbus, Miss.
over six years. It was Sunday night during prime time from
8:40 to 9:00 p.m. He preached for three of the largest (at
the time) churches in Mississippi. He had two memorable
debates while living in Fulton, Mississippi.
His widow, Flodine Powell, lives in Henderson, TN and
worships at the Henderson church of Christ.

DIRECTIONS TO THE CEMETERY
From Interstate 55 take the Grenada Exit (206). Travel west
8.0 miles to Highway 35.Turn South (left) and travel 10.9
miles to CR 113. Turn west (left). Travel on CR 113 (gravel
road) which merges into CR 123 and turns south. Total miles:
2.7. Turn east (left) onto the dirt road that leads to the
Old Union Church of Christ. The cemetery is on the church
property.
Old Union Church was established in 1910. Several members of
Jimmy Powell are buried in the cemetery. Jimmy graduated from
high school just a few miles away.
