M. H. NORTHCROSS PASSES AT AGE OF
NINETY-ONE
by H. C. SHOULDERS
After a short illness, M. H. Northcross passed away at his
home, in Eagle Lake, Fla., January 23, 1941. He was born
September 23, 1849, making his life on earth ninety-one years
and four months. He was reared in northern Mississippi near
the Tennessee line. He attended the schools of his
neighborhood and began teaching when just a young man. While
teaching school he began to preach the gospel, and was
actively engaged in the proclamation of the gospel for about
sixty years. During the last ten or twelve years of his life
his health has been such that he was not able to preach, but
often said that he was planning to preach yet.
When in his prime, Brother Northcross was a power in the
pulpit. His work as an evangelist began in Mississippi and
took him into Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia,
Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida.
During his active preaching he engaged in a number of
debates, being a bold defender of the New Testament church.
He was a member of the church for about seventy years.
When about twenty-one, Brother Northcross was married to Miss
Anna Gillum, of his home neighborhood. To this union were
born a boy and a girl. The girl died in early life, but the
son is still living in Nashville, Tenn. During the lifetime
of his first wife they lived in Franklin, Tenn. She died in
1905, and in 1908 he was again married to Miss Cynthia
Warren, of Sumner County, Tenn., who still survives. For
about two years I have spent quite a bit of time in Brother
Northcross' home. He was always cheerful and glad to see me.
I often called him "the boy," and it seemed to please him. He
would call me his ''big brother." Garvin M. Toms and I
conducted the funeral service Saturday afternoon, January 25,
at Eagle Lake, and the body was laid to rest in the Eagle
Lake Cemetery.
