Joseph Frank Cambers
1875-1958
". . . make known unto you, the beloved brother and
faithful minister and fellow-servant in the Lord." (Col. 4:
7.)
J. Frank Chambers was born July 26, 1875, near Booneville,
Miss. He grew up on the farm and had no opportunity of
attending school until after he was twenty years of age. He
had a thirst for knowledge, and attended the Normal
Institute, at Chalybeate, Miss., for nearly two years. Next
he attended Georgia Robertson College, National Teachers
Normal, and Freed-Hardeman College a number of years. He
studied the Bible under A. G. Freed and N. B. Hardeman.
Brother Chambers has been a teacher as well as a preacher.
He taught for fifteen years in the public schools of
Prentiss County, Miss. He served
four years as County Superintendent of Education in that
county. Next he taught in FreedHardeman College, Henderson,
Tenn., two years. He heard his first gospel sermon when
sixteen years of age, and was baptized at the age of
nineteen by the late John T. Underwood. He began to preach
at the age of thirty-three. His first local work was at
Sheffield, Ala., where he remained five and one-half years.
He then was located with the church at San Diego, Calif.,
five and a half years. He is now located with the church at
Ripley, Miss. He has done evangelistic work in Mississippi,
Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, and
California.
Brother Chambers married Miss Maude McCord while attending
Georgia Robertson Christian College. She was a teacher, and
taught with her husband most of the time while he was
teaching. She has been a real help to him as a gospel
preacher's wife. They reared one son, the late Smith
Chambers, who was tragically taken by death at the age of
twenty-two. He was a brilliant preacher. The writer had the
honor of claiming him as "one of his boys."
